Our Beers

At Royal Docks we strive to create new, exciting and forward-thinking beers focusing on quality and drinkability. We take inspiration from the classic brewing traditions of England as well as our peers in the craft brewing industry who bring vibrant new flavors and ideas to the world of beer.

Whether we are developing new techniques, adjusting conventional methods, or bringing the forgotten styles back into the limelight, we create each beer with the same level of care, attention and respect.

We brew beer that has a wide appeal because at Royal Docks we love to drink beer that can suite any mood. As the harshest critics of our own work, we will only release beers that are of a high standard, well balanced and drinkable.

Our signature beer has its beginning in the great taste of European style lagers. Natural yeasts, locally gown malt and hops provide for the aromatic flavor that won't confuse the palate. This recipe originated from the East Anglia region of the United Kingdom and was brought across the pond for your taste pleasure.

Brewed in the time honored German ale tradition of Köln, Germany, 67 Alaska is very pale with a mild though assertive flavor from noble-pedigree hops from the Hallertau region round out the aroma and sweetness of Continental malts.

Hop-forward though balanced, Prodigal, the first beer ever introduced by Royal Docks, is a West-Coast style American IPA through and through. Prodigal delivers a surplus of summery floral and citrus notes throughout the nose, flavour and finish and a delicate malt character thanks to true-blue American ingredients throughout.
Prodigal is a simple brew, really. The malt bill is ninety percent American Pale malt with the balance made up of a light American crystal malt. The kettle is charged with hops three times during the boil; Nugget for bittering and a combination of Citra and Amarillo late in the boil and at the end.
One of our house yeast strains lends the beer a crisp, clean west-coast bitterness and aroma, but most of the character is realized post-fermentation. Once the beer has reached terminal gravity, a very healthy dry hop charge – more than half the total hops – is added to the beer. Twelve hours later, the beer is rapidly chilled to 1°C and the hops are allowed to steep at that temperature for 6 days.

The Parable of the Prodigal Brew

Early in our journey building a brewery that paid homage to our affinity for the uniquely English pub culture but at the same time embraced modern American expectations for design and taste, it was mentioned by a friend that we were, in a sense, Britain’s prodigal son come home.

It occurred to us right away that the perfect beer to illustrate and embody the idea of the studied American twist on English culture was the IPA. India Read Less

Born in America but with a soul recalling a distant English ancestry, Tanglefoot is one of the flagship India Pale Ales from the Royal Docks Brewing Company.
Tanglefoot is an American IPA in that it is a decidedly hoppier cousin to the historical British beers from which the style’s name is borrowed. The beer features a piney and resinous nose with a pleasant, rounded bitterness from healthy doses of American Nugget, Cascade and Mosaic hops.
Tanglefoot reveals its storied English heritage as it offsets the massive hop charge with a full bodied palate and sturdy malt backbone thanks to the British-grown, floor-malted Maris Otter and Harrington barley; prized throughout the world for their superior flavour and aromatics.
The Tanglefoot Legend:
The 12th Century poet and priest, La3amon was the first to chronicle the Arturian tradition. He is also the source of the legend of Pendragon’s ales.

Original Middle English:
Beore wes iworht in Aualun

La3amon

Translation:
A beer wrought in Avalon
with magic crafted
to do our enemies woe

driving them like a fox
mad and wild
over hills and dales
leaving them with tongues

Born and bred in the oaken barrels common to a great many of the Belgian-style beers produced at Royal Docks, Dæmonium is a big, fruity and floral Belgian strong golden ale.
In deference to - or perhaps imitation of - the classics of the style brewed north of Brussels, Dæmonium is made with Dutch, British and French malts and dosed with dextrose in the kettle and again before maturation. The wort is cast into spent red wine barrels wherein lay dormant the house yeast strains that produce the variable fruit and spice flavors and aromas that are the hallmarks of the style and signature to Royal Docks’ Belgian-inspired beers. Fermentation is at ambient temperature - reaching as high as 26° C. Maturation and aging take place over 30 days on the yeast in the same barrels at 2° C.
The hops - Golding from the Southeast of England and several noble varieties from the continent - lend Dæmonium a delicate fresh floral and spicy fragrance and a soft bitter foundation to support the esters and phenolics produced buy the yeasts. Read Less

According to legend, King Arthur’s father, Uther Pendragon, was possessed of two magical ales. Pendragon RareWit is our homage to the first of those beers - magically ‘wrought in Avalon’ to refresh knights after battle and imbue them with the ‘courage of the Red Dragon’. Rather than hops, Pendragon RareWit relies on a pantheon of herbs and spices - many native to the Welsh Countryside - to provide a refreshing citrusy floral balance to the sweetness of barley malt and unmalted wheat.
